Summer Reading Part 1

Updated: Aug 23

The Summer holidays are almost upon us – they’ve started in some parts of the UK – and we all love a good book to keep us occupied at home or abroad.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll give my recommendations for children, teenagers, adults and hopefully give you some ideas for holiday reading.

This first list of books is recommended by our daughter.  She is 15, but these are the books that she really enjoyed when she was 8-12 years old.  These books are still lovingly kept in her home library.

Letters From the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll (or any Emma Carroll book) she writes brilliant historical fiction with strong female characters.

Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls. 100 bedtime stories about extraordinary women from the past and present.

No Ballet Shoes in Syria by Catherine Bruton.   A beautiful story about Aya, a Syrian refugee and her exceptional talent in ballet as well as her fight to remain in the UK.

The Mallory Towers Series by Enid Blyton.  The classic boarding school series and one that I enjoyed as a young girl.

Peril en Pointe by Helen Lipscombe.  A mix of boarding school, ballet and espionage!

Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell.  An orphan takes up with a gang of street urchins who scavenge on the rooftops of Paris.

The Monsters of Rookhaven by Padraig Kenny.  A monster and her family are discovered by human children; an unusual, heartbreaking and chilling story about monsters and humans.

October, October by Katya Balen.  October and her dad live in the woods, until the year October turns 11, then everything changes.

Asha and the Spirit Bird by Jasbinder Bilan.  A determined young girl goes on a Himalayan adventure with her best friend and the spirit animal of her grandmother for company.

The Last Bear by Hannah Gold.  This beautifully illustrated book is part animal adventure and part commentary on climate change and endangered species.

Are You There God?  It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume.  A 50 year old masterpiece on teenage angst.

The Book for Clever Kids is packed with fascinating facts and poses questions such as “What should you do if zombies attack?”

I hope this list gives you some inspiration.  Please get in touch with your recommendations for Summer reading and I will include them in a future blog.
