GCSE results and resits

My blog posts are usually personal and a way for the reader to get to know one of the faces behind Mr L's Online English. However, GCSE results day, resits (and the fallout) means that my mind has been on business and at times I've felt a bit cross.

Mr L has helped many students this year and all have got great grades in GCSE English Language and Literature. Our daughter sat her GCSE English Language exam a year early and passed - we're so proud of her. As my readers know from a previous blog, we took her out of school at the beginning of Year 9, and such was her state of mind, it took around 6 months for her to decompress and begin to recover from the emotional bullying she endured at school.

Home educated young people can take their GCSEs anytime, and many take one exam per year, so by the time they are 16 they don't have that pressure of having to study for 12 subjects at once. It really is ludicrous that our grammar schools insist on 12 GCSEs - there is no justification for it.

Don't get me wrong. I believe our young people should be challenged, stretched and shown what they can achieve. Our daughter was Montessori educated until 11 years old and taking pride in herself and her achievements was a big part of the Montessori philosophy.

But why does that achievement have to be 12 A* grades in subjects that are largely chosen by the school. What about those young people who are practical rather than academic? What about those young people who struggle at school, but are bright and have ambition?

Unfortunately we are stuck with this system and the best we can do is help our young people get the qualifications they need for the next stage of their life, whether that's further study, apprenticeship or work. Help them get through the November resits so that they can progress. English language and literature (as well as Maths) are essential so that our young people can move on to further education, whatever that looks like.

If you think we could help your young person get through a November resit, click on the button below and book a free consultation. There's no catch and no obligation to use our services, but Mr L might just be the tutor your young person needs.
